Year 1999 was first full season for Hofmann in 250ccm world championship, and he finished it in 16th place, scoring 51 points. In this season, he rode TSR Honda and his best finish was in France, where he ended race in 8th place.
In 2000, Alex Hofman swapped TSR Honda for Aprilia, but due the fact that he scored points on only three races, he ends up in 25th place. His best finish for this season was 10th place in Malaysia.

In 2002, Hofmann makes four wild card appearances for Yamaha, scoring points on two races. Best finish in this season he made on his home GP in Germany, where he finished in 10th place.
It was logical step from Germany based Kawasaki MotoGP team to hire Alex Hofmann as test rider in 2003, and they did that. Test rider role allowed him to make 4 wildcard rides, and to score points for Kawasaki on two races, making best result in Dutch TT at Assen, where he finished in 10th place.
Promissing results from 2003 were convincing enough for Kawasaki MotoGP team to hire Alex Hofmann as official rider in 2004 alongside Shinya Nakano, and German rider finishes this season in 15th place, with total score of 51 points. His best result in this season was 9th place in Qatar.
In 2005, Hofmann stays with Kawasaki, and finishes first race in Spain in 11th place, but misses following three races due to injury sustained in promotional ride for GP of Portugal.
